The Design of a Generic QoS Architecture for Open Systems

The usual best-effort nature of services provided by currently available computing systems is unsuitable for a series of novel applications which require more predictable behaviour. These applications range from embedded control systems to desktop multimedia applications, and have very specific service requirements according to the activity performed or to the tolerance of the user. The requirements of this kind of application are described through the specification of a desired level of quality of service, or ‘QoS’ for short.
